Impala Platinum No12 North shaft Headgear

WINNER OF THE SAISC AWARD FOR THE BEST MINING PROJECT 2004

In 2004, Louwill received this prestigious award for fabricating and constructing the best project in the Mining Division of the annual Southern African Institute of Steel Construction’s steel awards evening. The project was the headgear at Impala Platinum No.12 North Shaft. This headgear was unique in that it was a structure fabricated mainly from boxed girder sections. In addition, the headgear was also supported on the front end by the headgear bin, which is normally a stand-alone structure. This unique design ensured that less steel would be required and therefore the cost of the project would be less than a conventional headgear structure.

Wesizwe Platinum Mine Mine shaft headgear

WINNER OF THE SAISC AWARD FOR THE BESTMINING PROJECT 2014

The same was achieved during the 2014 steel awards when Louwill was again awarded the prize for the best Mining Project, this time for the headgear at Bakubung Platinum’s Wesizwe mine near Rustenburg. This project was a close second to the overall winner of Steel Awards 2014, which includes a wide-range of projects spanning several industries and activities, such as shopping malls, major bridges, light steel frame houses, and office blocks. The headgear, one of the highest steel structures in the country, is 82m in height and contains in the region of 1850 tons of steel. The erection was completed in record time with the main structure going up in less than 30 days from the start of the first lift – truly a remarkable achievement!
